Passage: Luke 13

Jesus told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. 7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’

Key Points

Eugene Peterson says;

“A parable is not an illustration, nor an explanation. We cannot look at a parable as a spectator and get it. A parable does not make a thing easier; it makes it harder by requiring participation, by entering the story, by taking on a role…the parables are basic verbal defences against disengaged complacency. Parables release the adrenaline of urgency into our bloodstream.”

  • There are some fertilizers we all need.
  • Fertilizers are sometimes unpleasant
  • Jesus wants you to be fruitful
