Small Group Questions: When I See the Cross I See…

easter-at-lifestreams

Icebreaker:
Take time for each individual in the group to complete the statement “When I see the cross I see…”

Read:
Have members of the group read the following verses aloud:
Matthew 1:21
Romans 6:18-23
1 Peter 2:24
1 Peter 3:18
2 Corinthians 5:15-21
Hebrews 10:12,
Hebrews 12:2

Discuss:
“When I see the cross I see ‘Freedom’.”
Following the scripture above, ask the group:
Freedom from what?
Can we list things we are free from?

Read
Have one of the group read 1 Corinthians 15:17-26
Why is the resurrection essential?

Read
Have one of the group read 2 Timothy 1:10 and 1 Corinthians 15:54-57.
What added freedom is ours because of the resurrection?

Discuss:
Can we prove to an honest enquirer that the resurrection is historical fact, the only possible explanation for the events:
Did Jesus not die, but only swooned on the cross, then revived in the cool tomb? John 19:31-35
Did the disciples steal the body and claim he was alive? John 20:3-19. Mark 16:11-14, Luke 24:11-12.
Did the Jewish leaders steal the body? Matthew 27:62-65
Did the Roman soldiers steal the body? Matthew 28:11-15

Who else would steal the body?

What transformed the disciples from fear and mourning to confidence, joy and courage?
See the following passages:
Matthew 28:8-16
Luke 24:36-48
John 20:20-28

Reflection:
What gives you confidence in the risen Jesus?
How do you maintain and cultivate your faith and the faith of other believers around you?
How do you help plant the seed of faith in people who are searching?

Prayer
Give thanks to God for your freedom in Christ. Pray for each other, for an encouragement in faith and the opportunity to help others find freedom through the life and death of Jesus.
