Small Group Questions: God’s Power through Christ
Reflect on a time when you were hurt or judged by people.
Share what happened, how you responded and what was the result.
Discuss this idea from the message:
‘Scripture is God’s heart of love shared with us. When you read scripture, don’t read it as God yelling at you. It’s his love letter to us.’
‘We all have pride. We all have some arrogance.’
Do you agree?
Ask God individually to reveal in what areas of your life you have pride and/or arrogance.
Ask group members to tell you quietly later if they have seen pride or arrogance in you.
Talk about how pride can remain undetected unless God reveals it.
Thankfulness as one thing that helps us grow in humility.
How does thankfulness help us be humble?
What else helps you to grow in humility?
David mentioned that it is important to learn to suffer redemptively; not to ask why, but to ask how do I now respond? “How are you going to redeem this God, how can you use this for your glory?”
Talk about this concept.
Have one of the group read 1 Corinthians 4:13 and 2 Corinthians 5:21
Discuss the mental, moral and spiritual suffering of Christ as He became the scum of the earth, the garbage of our filthy sins, so that we can be given His holiness.
In what way did Paul and his team share that same suffering?
Have any of you felt a bit like you have shared in suffering for Jesus’ sake? Tell the story.
Have one of the group read 1 Corinthians 4:14-17.
Discuss on what it means for you to be a spiritual father or mother today.
What do you feel about that?
Who has been a spiritual father or mother for you?
What specifically do you think Paul means in verse 16, and how is this ‘life giving’ for you and others?
What was the significance of Paul sending Timothy to the Corinthian church?
What does that say to us today?
Verse 20 says “the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power”.
What does that mean?
Can you illustrate or describe this in a way that would be meaningful for people that do not know Jesus?
Pray into God redeeming suffering in your life and the lives of those around you. Pray for God’s power and presence to be evident, and that you have the words and means to share this.
