1 Corinthians 11:2-16 – Do Nothing to Distract from the Glory of God
September 12, 2017
Speaker: Rod Thom
Passage: 1 Corinthians 11:1-16
1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man,[a] and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.
What do head coverings have to do with worship in our current context?
“Paul establishes the principle that one should do nothing to distract from the glory of God (especially by breaking convention) when the community is at worship.” (Gordon Fee)
- In essentials: Unity. In non-essentials: Liberty. Through all beliefs: we show Love.
- Worship may be culturally sensitive, but it must honour God.
- Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3)
