The Importance of Prayer
Prayer! We all know it’s important. But…
We all believe praying can really change situations. But we all lead such busy lives that prayer often comes under the ‘optional extras’ list. Take a look at these quotes from men and women who have impacted the world over the centuries. The idea isn’t to make us feel guilty, but just to show that for them it was the most important thing in their day and ministry. Wow!
I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.
Martin Luther 1483-1546 Inspirer of the Reformation
He who runs from God in the morning will scarcely find him the rest of the day.
John Bunyan 1628-1688 Author of Pilgrim’s Progress
Prayer is not learned in a classroom but in the closet.
E M Bounds 1835-1913 Author of several books on prayer
Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.

He who kneels most stands the best.
D.L.Moody 1837-1899 American evangelist, publisher and founder of Moody Bible Institute
But how do we go about praying? It’s a question the disciples asked Jesus. He gave them a ‘model prayer’ as a starting place. And John 17 includes Jesus’ heartfelt prayer for his disciples before he left earth. He showed by example how important prayer was in his life. It’s also something that can only be learned by practising. Here are some wise words from those who’ve practised praying for many years.
I would rather teach one man to pray than ten men to preach.
Charles Spurgeon 1834-1892 Famous Baptist preacher and teacher
We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties. Prayer does not fit us for the greater work. Prayer is the greater work.
Oswald Chambers 1874-1917 Evangelist, teacher and author
Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at his disposition, and listening to his voice in the depths of our hearts.
Mother Teresa of India 1910-1997
The more you pray, the less you panic. The more you worship, the less you worry. You’ll feel more patient and less pressured.
Rick Warren 1954– American pastor and author
Although our own needs and those of our families and others around us are major concerns, God wants our prayer vision to extend much wider so we can join Him in what He wants to accomplish all over the world.
There is no other activity in life so important as that of prayer. Every other activity depends on prayer for its best efficiency.
M.E.Andross. American author born 19th century with writings published during early 20th century
We must begin to believe that God, in the mystery of prayer, has entrusted us with a force that can move the heavenly world, and can bring its power down to earth. The man who mobilizes the Christian church to pray will make the greatest contribution to world evangelization in history.
