Small Group Questions – Spiritual Gifts

Have you ever received a gift from someone that overwhelmed or excited you? Share with the group.

Have one of the group read 1 Corinthians 12:1-1

Daron mentioned that the Spirit is still active in granting spiritual gifts.
Discuss your understanding of this, is this true?
What would it mean if gifts were not present now in the Church?
What does it mean that they are?
Why does this matter?
In what ways may you be more sensitive to the gifts of the Spirit?

Read 1 Corinthians 12:2-3.
Daron talked about the abuse of worship times in applying the practices and spirituality of the surrounding pagan culture. He also shared of false expressions of the Holy Spirit.
In what ways can we be aware of fake expressions of the Holy Spirit?
Have you even seen a manifestation of spirituality that claimed to be the Holy Spirit but was not?
Consider and discuss the importance of Daron’s advice to ask questions of the individual, ask about their understanding of Jesus:

  • Is Jesus their personal Saviour and Lord
  • Is Jesus the Son of God
  • Is Jesus risen again
  • Is Jesus accursed
  • to see more about this, and for further ways to respond in this situation see Rob Reimer’s book Soul Care.

What is the scriptural basis for these questions?

Read 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
Gordon Fee raises a challenging question about recognition of the Holy Spirit and His works:
‘Rather than ask how the Spirit “shows himself,” the church instead should be asking how it shows itself and its witness to be Spirit driven.’
Have you ever experienced blessing through other peoples gifts of the Spirit?
Have you had the chance to bless others or encourage the Church through your gifts?
How might we grow in being a ‘Spirit driven’ church?

Do you know your own Spiritual Gifts? If so, share with the group.
Are all of your gifts developed, or is the Holy Spirit still developing them in you?
When do you use your gifts?
Do you ever suppress them? Why? Is this the right thing to do?

If you are not aware or want to check your gifts there are several resources available, below is one the group may choose to use. It requires time, prayer and trust, but remember that Spiritual gifts are most often expressed and observed in the community of believers, so be prepared to support each other in this appraisal.

Spiritual Gifts Assessment

Pray for each other to be encouraged through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, to use those gifts both sensitively and effectively for the glory of God. Pray for those who are seeking to know their gifts, that they may be available to the moving of the Holy Spirit through them, and that they will both discover and find the application of their gifts. Pray that we may grow in being a Spirit driven church.
